Data Analytics Group
Our primary research interests are in data mining, machine learning and bioinformatics. In recent years, we have extensive research in causal discovery for evidence-based decision making, and robust, fair and interpretable machine learning.
We are conducting applied research in various areas including event detection with satellite images and sensory data, anomaly detection in time series and social media data, causality-based recommender systems, heterogeneous treatment effect in marketing and medicare, and learning analytics.
Our research work has been supported by Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery grants and various CRC and industrial grants, and our research results have been published widely in top international journals and conferences. We will deliver you smart solutions for your complex data problems.

- August 2026 Four PhD scholarships available 4 scholarships
- 2026 Fair graph representation learning accepted at AAAI 2026, and TabPFN-based early detection of long COVID published in Machine Learning: Science and Technology.
- 2025 Group papers accepted at ICML 2025, IJCAI 2025 and The ACM Web Conference 2025 — and six members completed their PhDs.
- 2024 Three group members completed their PhDs: Ji-Young Park, Ziqi Xu and Liang Zhao.
- 2023 Awarded an ARC Discovery Project, “Building competency-aware and assuring machine learning systems” (2023–2026), and organised the CDPD 2023 SIGKDD workshop.
- 2022 Released DEEP_causal on PyPI for causal heterogeneity discovery in personalised decision making.
